Council seeks feedback on Parramatta pool options

Planning for a new aquatic leisure centre in Parramatta is picking up pace, with Council now calling for community feedback on a proposed model for the centre, which will involve an investment of $30 million from City of Parramatta, in addition to the $30 million pledged by the State Government.

Following extensive consultation already undertaken and the completion of a Draft Feasibility Study, Council is proposing to build an inclusive new facility that features four heated pools, a fitness centre, an all-abilities water play park, on-site café, and parking for approximately 200 cars.

Swimmers would have access to a ten lane 50m outdoor pool, an outdoor leisure pool, a dedicated (indoor) Learn to Swim pool, and a 25m indoor pool to allow swimming all year round.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson said Council is working closely with residents, Parramatta Park Trust, the State Government and other stakeholders to deliver a modern complex that meets the needs of a rapidly growing community.

“We know how important swimming facilities are to our community and their feedback has been integral in the development of the model Council is now considering for Parramatta’s new pool,” Cr Wilson said.

“The new aquatic leisure centre will be a significant investment for Council so we want to ensure that we achieve the best outcome for our City and its residents, and I encourage the community to have their say on the facilities we are proposing to include.”

Additional features that could be considered for inclusion in the aquatic leisure centre if more funding were to become available include diving facilities, a crèche, a hydrotherapy pool, water slides, increased parking and a multi-use indoor sports hall.

Council is calling on people to provide feedback on the proposed pool model via an online survey at www.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/poolupdate

Submissions will be accepted until 22 November 2017. They will inform the business case for the centre which will be considered by Council in December.

Parramatta Park Trust has confirmed a site on the former golf course, near the corner of Park Parade and Pitt Street in the Mays Hill precinct as the preferred location for the swimming centre.

Construction will begin in 2018, following detailed design work and the granting of planning approval, with the pool expected to be complete and operational by March 2020.
